History of Shetland Ponies

Shetland Ponies Originated from the Shetland Isles Located Northeast Mainland Scotland Small Horses have been kept on the Shetland Isles since Bonze age. Shetland ponies were first used for pulling carts,carrying peats,coal and other items. Then as thr industrial Revolution increased the needs for coal int he mid 19th century thousands of Shetlands traveled to Britain to be pit-ponies.

 Today Shetlands are ridden by children and are shown by both children and adults at horse shows in harness driving classes as well as for pleasure driving.

Characteristics

  Shetlands are hardy and strong shetlands are generally gentle, and strong tempered and very intelligent by nature. They make good childrens ponies and sometimes noted for having a 'brave' character but can be opionated or cheeky. For its size the shetlan ponies is the strongest of all horses and pony breeds it can pull twicw its own weight many ponies are long-lived it is not unusal for a shetland ponie to live more than 30 years.
